According to legend, a Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1774 on the site of an old church, at the time when Kikinda was given the privileged status of seat of the Great Kikinda District.
The icons of the Last Supper, on the north side, and the Ascension of the Lord, on the south side, were painted by Teodor Ilić Češljar in 1790. The compositions in the nave – the Resurrection and the Transfiguration, as well as Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well and the Wedding at Cana in Galilee – were painted by Ljubomir Aleksandrović in 1879. The iconostasis of 1773 is the work of Teodor Ilić Češljar, then a young man, or of Jakov Orfelin.
