Cetate Synagogue

The synagogue was built on the initiative of Rabbi Maurice Hirschfeld and designed by the Viennese architect Igatz Schuhmann. It was erected between 1863 and 1865 for the Spanish Jewish community of the city. The place of worship is also known for the fact that Rabbi David Opelheim is buried here. The building is in the eclectic historicist style typical of the second half of the 19th century, with ornaments inspired by Moorish architecture and with Byzantine and Roman influences. The facade of the building is covered with ceramic tiles. The building also has two towers and an outer dome. In 2001 the synagogue was entrusted to the Banatul Philharmonic of Timișoara.
